Full-Day Offshore Fishing Charter in Kailua-Kona

When you're looking for world-class deep sea fishing, the waters off Kailua-Kona deliver like nowhere else on earth. This 10-hour offshore charter with Konadice Sportfishing puts you right in the heart of Hawaii's most productive big game fishing grounds. We're talking about waters where thousand-pound Blue Marlin cruise the drop-offs, massive Yellowfin Tuna patrol the seamounts, and colorful Mahi Mahi light up the surface around floating debris. Whether you've been fishing your whole life or you're picking up a rod for the first time, our professional crew will put you on fish and make sure you have the skills to land them. You'll need to bring your own food, drinks, and sunscreen – we've got everything else covered, from top-shelf tackle to the local knowledge that makes all the difference out there.

What to Expect on the Water

This isn't your typical half-day trip where you're rushing back to the dock just as the bite heats up. With 10 hours on the water, we have the luxury of time to work the prime fishing zones properly. We'll start the day running out to the deep blue, where the ocean floor drops from 600 feet to over 6,000 feet in less than two miles. That dramatic underwater topography creates the perfect conditions for baitfish, and where you find bait, you find the predators. The boat accommodates up to 6 anglers, which means everyone gets plenty of room to fish and personalized attention from the crew. We'll spend our time trolling the productive waters between 1,000 and 3,000 feet deep, adjusting our techniques based on what we're seeing on the fish finder and what's been producing lately. The beauty of a full day is that we can cover a lot of water and adapt to changing conditions – if the morning bite is slow, we've got all afternoon to find where the fish are holding.

Trolling Techniques & Gear

We run a spread of lures designed to attract different species at various depths. The outriggers carry our marlin lures – usually 8 to 12-inch skirted heads in colors that have been producing. Inside those, we'll run smaller lures for Mahi Mahi and Wahoo, often with a mix of artificials and natural baits like flying fish or small Ono. The center lines typically carry our tuna gear, with cedar plugs or feathers that dive deeper in the water column. All our reels are spooled with heavy line – usually 80 to 130-pound test – because you never know when a giant is going to grab your bait. The rods are matched to the technique, from lighter outfits for Mahi Mahi up to heavy-duty marlin sticks that can handle fish over 500 pounds. Don't worry if you've never used this kind of gear before – our crew will coach you through everything from setting the hook to fighting the fish. We've taught thousands of anglers over the years, and there's nothing better than watching someone land their first big Pacific fish.

Top Catches This Season

The Blue Marlin around Kona are legendary for good reason – these waters consistently produce some of the largest marlin caught anywhere in the Pacific. Peak season runs from May through September, but we see fish year-round, with the biggest typically showing up during the summer months. A 200-pound marlin is a nice fish here, 400 pounds gets exciting, and anything over 600 pounds is the fish of a lifetime. They're ambush predators that often hit without warning, turning a peaceful trolling session into controlled chaos in seconds. Yellowfin Tuna, known locally as Ahi, are another customer favorite that can show up any time of year. The fish we catch offshore typically run 40 to 150 pounds, with occasional giants pushing 200-plus. They're incredibly strong fighters that make long runs and test your endurance – landing a big Ahi is as much about technique as it is about muscle.

Mahi Mahi bring the color and acrobatics that make for great photos and even better eating. These fish are most abundant from spring through fall, often traveling in schools around floating debris or kelp mats. They're aggressive feeders that hit lures hard and immediately start jumping, putting on a show that never gets old. A good-sized Mahi Mahi runs 15 to 40 pounds, with the occasional bull pushing 50-plus. Shortbill Spearfish are the sleeper hit of many trips – they're smaller cousins to marlin that jump just as much and fight just as hard pound-for-pound. They're most common during the warmer months and typically range from 20 to 60 pounds. Wahoo are the speed demons of the deep, capable of hitting 50 mph and making blistering runs that can empty a reel in seconds. They show up year-round but are most consistent from fall through spring, usually running 15 to 50 pounds with razor-sharp teeth that can cut through wire leaders.

quotes

Captain Jim and his deckhand Brandon absolutely crushed it! We booked a 10-hour trip and they turned it into 12 hours because Jim wasn’t happy with the bite and refused to quit. Non-stop effort, constant moves, and zero give-up attitude. Walked off with ~6 small bigeye tuna, a 120 lb blue marlin of a lifetime, and one big mahi that got sharked at the gaff (classic offshore robbery). Hands-down one of the hardest-working crews I’ve ever fished with. If you want captains who actually care about putting you on fish, book Captain Jim and his crew!

Blue Marlin

Blue marlin are the kings of our waters - the ultimate trophy fish that brings anglers from around the world to Kona. Females can reach over 1,000 pounds (we call those "granders"), while males typically stay under 350. These powerful fish patrol the deep blue water along current edges and temperature breaks, usually 20+ miles offshore. Hawaii offers year-round fishing, but summer months tend to be most productive. The fight is legendary - they'll jump, run, and test every piece of your gear. The meat is good eating, though many choose to release these magnificent fish. Our local trick: troll large lures at 7-9 knots along the drop-off where warm surface water meets cooler depths. Heavy tackle is essential - 50-80 pound class minimum.

Blue Marlin

Mahi Mahi or Common Dolphinfish

Mahi mahi are one of our most reliable catches and fantastic eating - that's why locals call them "dorado" meaning golden. They typically run 15-30 pounds but can reach 50+ on a good day. These fast-growing fish live only about 4 years but reproduce constantly, keeping populations strong. Look for them under floating debris, around fish aggregating devices (FADs), or wherever birds are working. They're surface dwellers that love chasing flying fish, so we troll lures that skip and splash on top. The fight is acrobatic with lots of jumps and runs. Year-round fishing here, though spring and fall tend to be best. Local tip: once you hook one, keep other lines in - mahi often travel in schools and you might double or triple up quickly.

Mahi Mahi or Common Dolphinfish

Shortbill Spearfish

The shortbill spearfish, or hebi as we call it locally, is a sleek billfish that's much lighter than marlin - usually running 30-75 pounds. They're built for speed with that shorter bill and high dorsal fin. These surface feeders cruise the deep blue water year-round here, though we see more during winter spawning season when water temps hit around 77°F. They're often caught as bonus fish when we're targeting marlin or ahi, but don't let that fool you - they put up a solid fight and make excellent table fare with a taste similar to marlin but a bit more pronounced. Pro tip: when trolling for other billfish, keep your lures moving fast since spearfish are aggressive hunters that love chasing down quick-moving bait.

Shortbill Spearfish

Wahoo Fish

Wahoo, or "ono" as we say here (meaning delicious), are built for speed - they can hit 60 mph and will test your reflexes. These streamlined fish typically run 20-50 pounds with that distinctive blue-striped silver body. They're loners or travel in small groups, cruising the offshore waters year-round, though May through October is prime time in Hawaii. The fight is explosive but brief - they'll scream off drag then tire quickly. What makes them special is the incredible white, flaky meat that's prized in restaurants. We target them with high-speed trolling at 12-15 knots using wire leaders since their razor teeth will cut through anything else. Pro tip: when you see a wahoo bite, immediately slow the boat - their initial run is so fast they'll often throw the hook if you keep pulling.

Wahoo Fish

Yellowcheek Wrasse

The yellowcheek wrasse isn't really a target for our deep water trips - these are small reef fish that max out around 11 inches and stick to shallow water between 65-300 feet over coral and rocky bottom. They're more of a pier fish that kids enjoy catching with light tackle and small hooks. The adults feed on worms and small crustaceans during the day, while juveniles actually work as "cleaner fish" picking parasites off other reef species. You'll find them around sandy areas near reefs where they can dive into the sand when threatened. If you're targeting them specifically, use size 4-6 hooks with fresh worms or mussels - skip the shrimp as they'll just nibble it. Best to practice catch and release with these colorful little guys.
